Niles North boys basketball player Duante Stephens has verbally committed to play for Southwestern Illinois College next season the junior college's athletic department confirmed Friday. Stephens made the announcement on Twitter Thursday night.
Stephens, a senior guard, was named to the Pioneer Press All-Area second team this past season. Stephens played one season with the Vikings after transferring from Notre Dame.
The SWIC Red Storm, a National Junior College Athletic Association Division I program, went 19-13 last season and lost in the Region 24 semifinals.
Duante Stephens wants to play college basketball.
He doesn’t want his career on the hardwood to end here.
Not at Notre Dame’s gym. Not at Niles North’s Main Gym.
To Stephens, his transfer from Notre Dame to Niles North following his junior season is hopefully just part of the path to a collegiate basketball career.
“Basketball could help me get a free education. Basketball is just something I love to do,” Stephens said. “I felt like whatever it took to play at the next level, I had to do.”
