Keep an eye on the Southland Conference duo of Bloom and Crete-Monee. The Blazing Trojans had some eye-opening performances at the Midwest Prep Invitational in Indianapolis last weekend, including winning efforts by James Harriel in the 200 meters (21.72 seconds) and Jonah Wiley in the 110 hurdles (14.63) and long jump (23-6). The Warriors, meanwhile, won H-F’s Dick Beebe Invitational for the first time in recent memory.
York is back. The Dukes won six state trophies in seven seasons from 2005-11, but have been shut out since. It’s looking like the drought may end this spring after York beat four-time defending Class 3A champ Lake Park 176-138 to win last week’s Bud Mohns Invitational at Downers Grove South.
Plainfield Central pole vaulter Luke Winder is in a class by himself. The reigning Class 3A champ cleared 17 feet, 1.5 inches — third-best outdoors in the nation — at the Kansas Relays last week. It’s the fourth time he’s been over 17 this year; no one else in Illinois has gone higher than 16-6.
