Thornton 79, Thornridge 52

THE SKINNY

Thornton junior Keondre Woods said, “everybody on our team could be a starter somewhere else.” He might be onto something. Woods came off the bench and scored all nine of his points in the second quarter to spark Thornton (13-5, 7-2) in a SouthWest Suburban Red romp.

TURNING POINT

A steal and layup from Thornridge’s Vic Trout cut Thornton’s lead to 28-23, but Woods capped a 7-0 run to end the half with an athletic reverse layup. Thornton then outscored Thornridge (7-17, 3-6) 10-2 to open the third quarter.

THE STAR

Thornton’s Justin Taylor netted 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He also had one of the games’ craftier moves, hesitating in the lane before attacking the rim for an up-and-under layup.

BY THE NUMBERS

Trout had 15 points and Xavier Robinson had 13 to pace Thornridge. Thornton had 11 players reach the scorebook. Da’Marques Turner chipped in 12 points and Robert McCalley and Jamani Pierce had eight apiece.

QUOTABLE

“I feel like I’m the sixth man on this team. If coach (Troy Jackson) needs buckets, that’s what I give him.” — Woods
