Illinois commit Aaron Jordan scored 24 points to lead Plainfield East to a 55-42 win over Sandburg on Saturday in the first game of the When Sides Collide Shootout at Glenbard East in Lombard.

High school kids generally don’t care too much about history, but Plainfield East junior Aaron Jordan smiled wide when he talked about being the first basketball player from Plainfield to earn a Big Ten scholarship. The sharpshooter has made an oral commitment to Illinois.

“It’s always an honor to be the first,” Jordan said. “But from what I’ve seen from the kids [in junior high in Plainfield] there will be a lot more on the way.”

Sandburg didn’t have an answer for Jordan on Saturday in the first game of the When Sides Collide Shootout at Glenbard East in Lombard. He scored 24 points to lead the Bengals to a 55-42 win.

Jordan shot 7-for-11 from the field, 4-for-6 from three.

“My dad [Rob Jordan] taught me how to shoot,” Jordan said. “He was always stressing it. I can pull it from pretty much anywhere. He didn’t play a lot of basketball, but he’s definitely a good teacher.”

Plainfield East (11-7) led by 10 after three quarters. Niko Kogionis’ jumper with 4:49 threatened to start a late Sandburg surge, but Jordan responded with back-to-back threes to essentially seal the win.

Kogionis led Sandburg (6-11) with some hot shooting of his own. The 6-2 junior scored 19 points, going 5-for-9 from three-point range.

Nick Novak scored eight and sophomore Elyjah Goss added six points and seven boards for Plainfield East.

“We’ve had some ups and downs this season,” Plainfield East coach Branden Adkins said. “We’ve been playing some good basketball and I think we’re getting better.”

Niko Cahue added 15 points and eight rebounds for Sandburg.
