There hasn’t been a player like Morgan Park’s Lamont Walker in the area is a long time. He’s the Jabari Parker of defense. In fact, Walker made his name guarding Parker the past few seasons. The 6-5 senior is the player Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin turns to when he needs a superstar shut down.

Monday in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament semifinals that superstar was Bogan guard Luwane Pipkins. Walker did his job, holding Pipkins to just nine points as the No. 5 Mustangs cruised to a 61-47 win and a showdown with No. 1 Stevenson in the championship game Tuesday night.

“Lamont Walker is the best defensive guy in the country,” Irvin said. “That’s what he does.”

Walker was nursing an ankle injury when No. 4 Bogan defeated Morgan Park on Dec. 17. With Pipkins neutralized, this matchup wasn’t ever very close. The Mustangs jumped out a 12-2 lead and never looked back.

Walker wasn’t overly impressed with his own effort on Pipkins.

“Last year I held him to zero points,” Walker said.

Josh Cunningham led Morgan Park (10-1) with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Point guard Charlie Moore added nine points and six assists. Kain Harris and Walker each scored nine as well.

Moore didn’t play at all two weeks ago in the Bogan victory.

“It’s great to be at full strength,” Irvin said. “We got the best point guard in the 2016 class back. We are ready to roll.”

Antoine Boyd led the Bengals (12-2) with 11 points and 11 boards. Bryce Barnes added 10 points.

Walker’s next task will be Stevenson’s Jalen Brunson. The two players are club teammates on the Mac Irvin Fire.

“Jalen Brunson is a real skilled guard,” Walker said. “I’ve guarded him in (AAU practice) so I know what he’s got.”

This was the second of five possible Bogan-Morgan Park games. The teams have one more conference matchup and then could meet in both the city and the state tournaments.
