Oak Park-River Forest’s defense was stellar all night and set the tone early, when Andre Lee and Nathan Godwin sacked Proviso West quarterback Dennis Bryant Jr. in the end zone for a first-quarter sack. Following the safety and subsequent kickoff, the Huskies responded quickly by taking a 8-0 lead after a Lloyd Yates touchdown run.
Proviso West (1-1, 0-1 WSC Silver) cut the margin to 15-6 toward the end of the third quarter on a TD pass from Bryant Jr. to Chance Haney. The Huskies (3-0, 1-0) did not hesitate to answer, as running back Mike Hayden scored rushing TDs on back-to-back drives to put the game out of reach.
Yates had control of the Huskies' offense all night, leading all rushers with 116 yards on 12 carries. He also found Simmie Cobbs for a 29-yard scoring strike with just 29 seconds left in the first half to give OPRF a 15-0 lead.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Huskies' defense limited Proviso West to 131 yards of offense, including 48 yards before the intermission. An interception and long return by Manny Reteria set up Oak Park’s score just before halftime.
“We have been practicing hard all week and I think defensively we did an amazing job. It was the best I have ever seen our defense play, and I have been on varsity for a while. We did not let up; we finished strong and started strong.” — Andre Lee
