No particular reason for the Ryan Boatright picture on top of today's notebook. It's a cool picture and Boatright was a special player, so why not. He didn't win the Sun-Times Player of the Year a couple years back, but he had my vote.
Evan Daniels of Scout released his latest class of 2014 national top 100. Young's Jahlil Okafor remains on top and Curie's Cliff Alexander is up to No. 5. Other locals included: Marian Catholic's Tyler Ulis, Young's Paul White, St. Rita's Vic Law and Sandburg's Malek Harris.
The 5-9 point guard continues his rise to national prominence. Ulis picked up a Kentucky offer over the weekend, ending all the dispute over why he had them on his list of final five. Today Ulis announced dates for some more official visits. He's going to Kentucky on Sept. 8-9 (along with St. Rita star Charles Matthews) and Michigan Sate on Sept. 6-7. He'll visit Iowa on Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
It's reasonable to expect a commitment some time shortly after that Kentucky visit on Sept. 9. Ulis jumped from No. 41 to No. 29 in the latest Scout national rankings.
Charles Matthews visited Wisconsin over the weekend and will head to Michigan State this weekend. Kansas, Kentucky, Marquette and Memphis are also gettting visits. Once Ulis, Okafor and Alexander are off the board expect most of the area's recruiting attention to shift to Matthews.
Young senior Paul White has trimmed his list to Arizona, DePaul, Connecticut, Georgetown and Minnesota. He's healing well from his injury and is expected to be ready for the season. Joe Henricksen has an update on that here.
CITY/SUBURBAN LINEUP SET
It didn't get a lot of attention last week, but The Integrity Group announced the lineup for one of the high school season's premier events. The event will be on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Niles West, with a rematch of last season's Class 4A title game as the headliner, Simeon vs. Stevenson. Marian Catholic and Lake Forest will tip-off the first game of the doubleheader at 6:30.
MORE SHOOTOUT ACTION
Plenty of shootout lineups have been trickling out the past few days, including the teams for the Chicago Elite Classic and the full set of games for the Team Rose Shootout. Check it all out here.
FROSH TO WATCH
Almost nothing gets a high school hoops aficianado buzzing as much as highly-touted incoming freshmen. There seems to be a real solid bunch of them this season, but you may not have heard of this one yet. Read all about 6-5 Christian Negron.
ORR IS BACK
Orr was ultra-talented last season, but had some key injuries and just seemed to run out of gas in late February/March. But the Spartans are back and loaded again. One player to watch is guard Issaiah Hayes, a very talented player that has been flying under the radar. Hayes has an offer from Texas-Pan American and interest from Illinois State, DePaul and New York-Buffalo. He took an unoffical to Bradley last season. Nearly every season there is a breakout senior in the Public League. Don't be surprised if Hayes is that player this season.
