Von Steuben quickly built an insurmountable lead with its 2-3 zone defense in the third quarter of a 61-48 victory over Maine East Monday night in the Glenbrook South Regional.
The Panthers switched to 2-3 zone defense after taking a 28-23 into halftime. Von Steuben outscored Maine East 12-2 in the first four minutes of the third quarter and coasted to an easy victory.
The Panthers, the No. 15 seed in the Glenbrook North Sectional, will play Notre Dame at 6 p.m. Tuesday night in a Glenbrook South Regional semifinal. Notre Dame is the sectional's No. 2 seed.
“It caused a problem for us,” said Maine East coach Dave Genis, of the 2-3 zone. “We worked on it all week and that was the ball game, the third quarter. We kind of played back on our heels; we didn't attack it liked we wanted to attack it.”
Von Steuben was led in scoring by senior guard Demetrius Faulkner, who scored a game-high 23 points on just eight attempts from the field. Senior guard Evan Nazzal led Maine East with 14 points, and sophomore forward Ezeke Omeke added 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.
