As Lyons gears up to face Addison Trail in the West Suburban crossover finale Wednesday in La Grange, realization that the end is near has dawned on the team’s seniors.

Once the playoffs begin, any senior must struggle with the idea that the next game could be the last.

It’s a revelation that hit Lyons guard Jarryd Heath recently as his team had fewer and fewer games remaining before the end of the regular season.

Lyons (11-14) placed sixth in the West Suburban Silver and was scheduled to play Addison Trail (9-19) in the West Suburban crossover finale Wednesday night in La Grange.

“This season went by really fast. It’s sad,” Heath said. “Last week, I realized that we were closer to the end.”

Heath is in his second season as a varsity starter and is a three-point specialist. A couple of his best games were in the first half of the season when he scored 18 points in a win over Riverside-Brookfield Dec. 1 and 18 in a 71-37 victory over Lane Dec. 26 to open York’s Tosh Classic.

“I’ve been on and off this season,” Heath said. “I’ve been in a slump pretty much (lately). Hopefully, I’ll begin to get it back for the playoffs.”

Heath and center Christopher O’Reilly are the only senior starters for Lyons. Heath does not participate in a spring sport, while O’Reilly’s athletic career will continue as one of Lyons’ top tennis players in the spring.

Lyons’ other seniors hoping to extend their careers a few more games are Connor Onion, Matt Aikens, Robert Palmer and Gabe Fisher. Aikens is an outfielder for Lyons’ baseball team.

Lyons earned a No. 15 seed in the Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional and opens the postseason at 6 p.m. Monday against 19th-seeded Willowbrook (10-15) at York. It will be the first time they meet this season.

With a win, Lyons would play West Suburban Silver runner-up York for the third time this season. York won 53-38 on Dec. 7 at home and 62-43 on Jan. 26 in La Grange.
