By David Perry

Niles West forced seven first-quarter turnovers and built a 25-9 lead after one quarter on its way to a 70-46 win over Waukegan in the Central Suburban South on Friday.

Waukegan’s talented point guard Jordan Johnson was on the bench in street clothes sitting out with a bad ankle Friday night, and Niles West took full advantage.

The Wolves (4-6, 15-10) forced seven first-quarter turnovers and built a 25-9 lead after eight minutes and went on to beat the Bulldogs 70-46 in the Central Suburban South finale for both teams.

The game was surprisingly lopsided; Niles West led by as many as 18 (38-20) in the first half and was up by the final margin of 24 points several teams in the fourth quarter.

Alex Darvill had 17 points, David McCoy 14, Mohammed Qureshi 10 and Ahmad Gibson 11 in the Wolves win.

Jerome Davis had 18 points and Devonte Taylor 15 for the Bulldogs (13-12, 5-5), who had 21 turnovers.

“We came out with real focus and energy tonight,” said West coach Bob Williams. “It was a mirror image of what happened the first time we played (a 72-60 Waukegan win). Up there, they had the focus and energy, but tonight, we played the full game.

“We reduced the number of easy baskets Waukegan got, and increased the number of easy baskets we got. That was the big difference.”

Waukegan hosts Niles North on Tuesday and Niles West hosts Maine West the same night.
