Sandburg's C.J. Brucki delivered Oak Park-River Forest's Davonte Mahomes his first loss of the season Friday morning in the Class 3A state wrestling quarterfinals.
The Sandburg senior took down an opponent he had lost to three times this season, defeating the OPRF junior Mahomes 9-4 at 160 pounds to advance to the semifinals Friday night. Mahomes won his next match Friday to stay alive for third place in the wrestlebacks with an 11-5 win over Hononegah's Tyler DeMoss.
Mahomes didn't have a simple explanation for suffering his first loss of the season.
"I'm not sure what happened," Mahomes said. "I didn't plan to be undefeated the whole season. I planned to wrestle hard all season. I guess I felt nervous. There was a lot of anxiety that got the best of me."
Mahomes (42-1) finished third at 152 last season, but his loss was the biggest upset of the quarterfinals in Class 3A.
The last time he faced Brucki (39-6) was in OPRF's 27-24 win over Sandburg in the Super Duels Jan. 12 at Sandburg.
Mahomes' loss leaves two other undefeated wrestlers remaining for top-ranked OPRF. Larry Early (44-0) at 132 and Joe Ariola (44-0) at 182 remained perfect entering Friday night's semifinals.
