Lions DL Jimmy Mitchell eyes Panther QB Anthony Dorsey during the West Suburban Conference matchup between host Proviso West and Lyons Township Friday October 12, 2012 in Hillside. | Scott Hardesty~for Sun-Times Media

It’s just a coincidence, but the Mitchell brothers from Lyons will end up playing college football in the same state, just not for the same team.

Senior defensive lineman Jimmy Mitchell signed with Lehigh Feb. 6 on the first day of the national signing period. His decision to play for the Mountain Hawks of the Patriot League was considered very late in the recruiting process. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Mitchell only committed to Lehigh in the last week of January and didn’t take his official visit until Feb. 2.

Mitchell’s older brother Ryan, a former Lyons standout, completed his junior season as a wide receiver at Penn in the Ivy League in the fall. Their father Tom is a former college football coach and has been an assistant coach on Kurt Weinberg’s staff at Lyons.

“With Lehigh, I didn’t go there because I would be close to Ryan,” Jimmy said. “I was looking at Penn early (in recruiting), but it didn’t play out.”

Mitchell said he chose Lehigh because of its previous success. The Hawks were ranked top-16 in D-I FCS two years ago and advanced to the national quarterfinals. They finished 10-1 last year.

“I’m really happy with my choice,” said Mitchell, who plans to study business.

He also considered Georgetown, San Diego and Dayton.
