St. Edward held off a fourth-quarter charge by Chicago Christian on Saturday on its way to a 70-62 Suburban Christian Gold road win.

St. Edward held off a fourth-quarter charge by Chicago Christian on its way to a 70-62 road win Saturday.

The Green Wave (18-5, 6-4 Suburban Christian Gold) led by as many as 17 points but the Knights (7-14, 2-5) refused to quit. They cut the deficit to just three points with 3:39 remaining behind Blaine Wright (14 points, three three-pointers) and senior Brenden Wolinski (17 points, 9-for-9 from the free-throw line).

However St. Edward withstood the Chicago Christian trap and hit its free throws down the stretch to capture the victory.

"We know [Chicago Christian] won't quit and they trap hard," Green Wave coach P.J. White said. ''We have a young team with starting two sophomores and it's a lot of pressure to handle Chicago Christian's trap, but we handled the ball well at times and hit some key shots."

Green Wave seniors Antonio Domel and Adrian Ponce stepped up big.

Domel keyed a 10-0 run to start the second half by scoring six points, finishing with 15 points, while Ponce scored 10 of his 22 points in the first quarter.

"They say defense wins games," Domel said, "but you have to put up points to win. I was just thinking score, score, score."

While White was happy with the play and progress of his young team, Knights coach Kevin Pittman was frustrated with his.

"I don't know how we think we can turn it on and off, but this is the way our season has gone," Pittman said. "We're going to make some changes this week. No adjustments; the way we approach the game; warmups. — see if that works.  I won't give up and I won't let them give up."
