New Trier hit 9-of-15 shots in a 24-point first period as an avalanche of first-half New Trier shots helped the Trevians post a 75-64 victory over Waukegan.

New Trier’s win Friday night in the Dog Pound pretty much buried Waukegan’s hopes for back-to-back Central Suburban South crowns.

The Trevians are now 21-4 overall and 7-1 in the division. Waukegan is 12-9 and 5-3.

It was “Pink Out” night at the Pound, with hundreds of Waukegan fans, cheerleaders and players wearing pink in some fashion to show support for the fight against breast cancer.

And though Waukegan fought gamely on the court, it never could overcome New Trier’s early barrage.

Waukegan got within 61-57 on two free throws by Quinton Davis with 4:38 left.

New Trier responded with a 7-1 run — buckets by Ken Angel and Steven Cook (monster dunk), and free throws by Cook (1) and Reid Berman (2) — re-established control for the Trevians.

Cook finished with 25 points and Berman had 14. Jordan Thomas added 13.

For Waukegan, Davis had 18 points and Jordan Johnson scored 16.

“It was a great high school basketball game,” said New Trier coach Scott Fricke. “We got off to a big lead, and we knew Waukegan wasn’t going to quit.

“They came back and cut it to 4-5 points, but I thought we showed a lot of toughness to withstand their rush. We made our free throws down the stretch and had a couple of kids hit some big shots.”

In the fourth quarter, New Trier was 12-of-17 from the foul line. It was 19-of-28 for the game.

Waukegan was 10-of-17 from the line in the game.
