The first half was a taffy pull.

Interesting enough, but the type of score you might have seen in the 1930s.

But after visiting Joliet West trailed Lockport 12-11 at halftime in Friday night’s SouthWest Suburban Blue battle, the Tigers’ Carl Terrell and Ryan Modiest heated up from long range.

And how.

Terrell (23 points) scored 19 points in the second half and Modiest scored nine of his 11 in the third quarter as West used a 12-0 run to springboard to a 56-47 victory.

“Nothing was falling for either side in the first half,” Terrell said, “but it was great defense by both teams.”

Perhaps, but West (12-5, 5-2) shot 4 of 20 from the floor and 2 of 8 from the free-throw line in the first half while Lockport (5-14, 3-4) was 6 of 21 from the field and committed 10 turnovers.

“Coach Thompson (Lockport coach Lawrence Thompson Jr.) is a great coach,” Terrell said. “He knew how to game plan for us.”

“Every possession where you don’t match Lockport’s intensity, they’re going to knock you down,” West coach Luke Yaklich sad.

The second half was different, however, as Terrell and Modiest, often off feeds from Morris Dunnigan, lit it up. The duo combined to go 7-for-8 from three-point range in the second half and were instrumental in the 12-0 run that turned a 22-20 deficit into a 32-22 lead late in the third quarter.

“Dunnigan did a nice job attacking our defense in the second half,” Thompson said. If you keep him from going to the basket, he gets the ball to the other guys. He’s such a force. You just hope the other guys are missing. They did the first half, not the second.”

John Campbell scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Porters.
