Simeon's Jabari Parker battles for a rebound with Bogan's Mysirell Green (33) and Sam Robinson.| Stacia Timonere~for Sun Times Media

Simeon had every reason to break apart on Wednesday at Bogan.

Early in the fourth quarter the No. 2 Wolverines found themselves in quite a spot. Coach Robert Smith was in the stands, unable to help after being suspended for four games. Point guard Jaylon Tate had just taken a rough foul, hitting his head on the floor. He was on the bench.

The sold out crowd was alive and the Bengals had cut a 17-point Simeon lead down to just six.

The Wolverines didn’t panic a bit. They clamped down on defense, holding Bogan to just one point in the quarter to grab a 67-48 win.

“That was tough,” Bogan coach Arthur Goodwin said. “We came all the way back and had them in a rough spot. I know Simeon doesn’t like coming in here to play because we can usually give them a test. We just weren’t consistent tonight. But we are getting better and it’s coming.”

Neither team scored for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Simeon senior Kendall Pollard stepped up and made a jumper with 3:50 to play, igniting a 14-1 run that closed the game.

Jabari Parker led the Wolverines (16-2, 8-0 Red South) with 21 points and five rebounds. Senior Kendrick Nunn added 19 points and six rebounds. Tate, who missed a minute of play after hitting his head, finished with nine points.

Russell Woods scored four and grabbed eight rebounds and Pollard finished with eight points.

Bogan sophomore Luwane Pipkins was 0-for-9 from the field in the first half, but led the second half comeback and finished with 13 points. Senior Juwan Henry also scored 13.

“It was a big crowd,” Goodwin said. “I think our students were probably here to watch Jabari Parker more than us though. They have been excited about that all week.”

Simeon sophomore coach Leonard Thomas served as Smith’s replacement for the game.
