Bogan coach Arthur Goodwin knows he has a good team.

Case in point: His Bengals rattled off 16 unanswered points Sunday to open a game against Riverside-Brookfield, a quality team, in the MLK Dream Classic at Young.

But, as Goodwin points out, good teams make runs, but great teams answer when the opponent responds.

“It’s all about how you answer that,” Goodwin said. “Like against Morgan Park [on Dec. 28] in the second and third quarters, we have breakdowns, so we have to work on being consistent.”

Senior guard Juwan Henry scored 25 points and backcourt mate Luwane Pipkins added 21 as Bogan rolled to an 86-62 victory over the Bulldogs. Sam Robinson and Mysirell Green had 10 points apiece for the Bengals.

Bogan (14-6) forced seven turnovers in four minutes during its 16-0 run in the first quarter.

Two dunks from Pipkins punctuated the run, and Green added two of his own as part of Bogan’s extended 18-4 run.

“We know we have to stay consistent to win these games,” Henry said. “If we play hard, it will be there. We play hard defensively all the time, and that got us going.”

Riverside-Brookfield reeled off its own impressive run, ending the quarter on a 15-4 spurt and tying the game at 20 in the second quarter on Damonta Henry’s fast-break basket.

But as he did all game, Juwan Henry had an answer. He made three consecutive baskets on a personal 7-0 run and helped Bogan regain control in 40 seconds.

“When we come back like that, it builds confidence for us,” Henry said. “That will help us beat other teams.”

Riverside-Brookfield cut the deficit to six points at 41-35 but got no closer. Pipkins scored 10 points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Miki Ljuboja led Riverside-Brookfield (14-5) with 24 points, and Damonta Henry chipped in with 19.
