It was an on-and-off night for Hinsdale Central and Glenbard West.
The Red Devils were off in the first and third quarters and the Hilltoppers struggled in the second and fourth quarters. The Devils were able to take advantage of the situation better than the Hilltoppers, pulling away 66-58 in a game that saw the best and worst of both teams.
“We’ve played well in stretches and we’ve played very poorly in stretches,” Red Devils coach Nick Latorre said.
The Red Devils (10-5, 5-1 West Suburban Silver) took a first-half lead behind 12 points by sophomore forward Matt Rafferty, who also had seven first-half rebounds.
Hinsdale Central used its size to its advantage and played stingy defense to take a 30-23 halftime lead over the Hilltoppers (8-7, 2-3).
Glenbard West rallied in the third, coming back from a 10-point deficit to take a 43-38 lead.
The Red Devils responded with a 9-0 run to close out the third and take the lead for good.
Rafferty led Hinsdale Central with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Owens had 15 and guard Chase Hamilton contributed 10.
“Being a senior, I need to take the initiative and lead this team when it counts,” Owens said.
For the Hilltoppers, Keith Hayes led all scorers with 23 points.
