Providence-St. Mel's Tevin King powers to the hoop past Seton's Mark Weems Jr. | Patrick Gleason~For Sun-Times Media

Providence-St. Mel’s 6-1 senior shooting guard Tevin King never feels any pressure.

Growing up on the west side of Chicago, King learned a lot by being around stars such as Marshall’s Patrick Beverly and Crane’s Sherron Collins.

He picked apart both of their games to add to his.

Attending school within five minutes of where you live isn’t always easy. King wants to be able to impress the people he grew up with but realizes it’s hard sometimes being so close.

“It’s tough going to school in this area, especially when you have friends who attend Whitney Young, Simeon and Morgan Park. It’s very tough,” King said.

With a number of players transferring schools to play with friends or the chance to be on a ranked team, King isn’t following his peers. The Providence-St. Mel star wants to do it on his own.

“I take pride in myself and becoming my own person,’’ King said. ‘‘I want to go to a school that I can build on my own.’’

One word to describe King’s play is “physical.” In a recent loss to Seton he didn’t take many outside shots but attacked the rim at every chance. He enjoyed taking the contact and getting to the free throw line.

While some people question King’s outside shooting ability, he will tell you differently.

“If you can’t stop me going to the basket I won’t waste my time shooting a jump shot,” King said. “I just put it in my head that I’m attacking the basket because it’s a high percentage shot.”

Although right now he plays shooting guard for his high school, King said that this summer he will start working more on his point guard skills to prepare for the next level.

“I look forward to it, I’m very effective getting to the basket, helping out others and getting my team involved,” he said.

By believing in himself and taking his own path King has helped his team to a 13-4 record and given them a huge boost. Having great character and his priorities in order the future is very bright for Tevin King.
