Crete-Monee's LaQuon Treadwell (6) runs in for a touchdown during Saturday's IHSA State Championship game between Crete-Monee and Cary-Grove high schools, hosted at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. | Paul Bergstrom ~ For Sun-Times Media

We know how Laquon Treadwell measures up against his peers.

The Crete-Monee senior is ranked the nation’s No. 1 high school receiver in the Class of 2013 by multiple sources, including CBS College Sports recruiting analyst Tim Lemming and Rivals.com.

That’s why Treadwell’s announcement of his college choice, scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Crete-Monee High School, is creating so much buzz. It’ll be carried live on HighSchoolCube.com and has the Twitter universe working overtime, with fans predicting his choice or making last-minute pleas to commit to their school.

Among the interested observers will be Lemming, who believes Treadwell could have a historic career.

“When all is said and done, he could be the No. 1 wide receiver to come out of Chicago in the modern era,” said Lemming, who is in his 34th year of evaluating prep talent.

“I’ve watched him develop,” Lemming said. “He’s a big, strong, athletic guy. He owes a lot to the head coach at Crete-Monee [Jerry Verde, who resigned after the season to take the Marian Catholic job], who developed the offense around him. Opportunity and ability have come together.”

Treadwell caught 81 passes for 1,424 yards and 16 touchdowns in leading the Warriors to a 14-0 record and their first state championship. He also rushed for 257 yards (almost eight yards per carry) and six scores, and was a lockdown defensive back.

The Sun-Times Player of the Year has more than 20 scholarship offers, but is believed to be down to four schools: in alphabetical order, Michigan, Mississippi, Okahoma and Oklahoma State. One of Treadwell’s former Crete-Monee teammates, Anthony Standifer, played in three games for Ole Miss as a true freshman defensive back this season.
