Reavis' Nick Bal defends a shot by Universal's Mailek Nahha Monday in Burbank.Mary Beth Nolan~For Sun-Times Media

Coming off Friday’s thrilling 49-47 win over Oak Forest, Reavis used a quick start to make sure things weren’t as dramatic Monday night.

The Rams hit seven of their first nine shots from the field, including three three-pointers and cruised to an 85-44 win over visiting Univeral.

Nick Bal fueled the Rams’ fast start, hitting his first seven shots — two treys, three two-point field goals and two free throws — before finally missing on a heave at the first-quarter buzzer.

“Lately, I haven’t been making many threes,” Bal said. “I came out and started this game hot. Hopefully, it will get me going and I keep it up. We knew we had to come out here and play this like any other game and try to get off to a good start.”

Bal led the Rams (12-5) with 20 points and six rebounds. Dawid Kasprzak added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench and Miguel Hernandez scored 10 points.

Mallek Nahha and Omar Mansour paced Universal with 13 points and six rebounds each.

Reavis led 46-27 at the break and utilized its bench a great deal in the second half.

“It was great seeing everyone get to play,” Bal said. “Those guys deserved it.”

They took advantage of the playing time, too. Reavis outscored Universal 19-8 in the fourth quarter. Szymon Ceremon led the way, scoring all six of his points in the final period.

“All our bench guys work hard every day in practice,” Reavis coach Jeff Smith said. “They’re the reason this team has gotten better. We try to schedule a lot of (junior varsity) games, so those guys know what they’re doing when they get in the game. They all did a great job.”

Eddie Puha contributed nine points and six rebounds and Mo Abousalem added eight points for the Rams, who finished 30-of-53 from the field.
