Highland Park should sleep very well Saturday night.

After winning a huge conference game against Maine West Friday night, the girls basketball team had a short turnaround, traveling to Lake Forest for an afternoon game with the Scouts. It took an extra period, but Highland Park prevailed, defeating the Scouts 48-41.

“An ugly win rather than a pretty loss. That’s what coach always tells us,” senior Lena Munzer said.

The Giants (13-7) led for most of the game and were ahead 33-27 heading into the fourth quarter. But Lake Forest (6-15) clamped down on Munzer, Highland Park’s star player. Denying her the ball and doubling a defender when she got her touches, Lake Forest held her to just two points in the final period. The Scouts got the game into overtime tied it at 38 when sophomore Brooke Green scored with 31 seconds remaining in regulation.

In overtime, the Giants found Munzer, who scored four consecutive free throws to make it 42-38 with less than two minutes remaining in the four-minute extra session. She would score six points in overtime, finishing with a game-high 23, to go with six steals and four blocked shots.

“After a really hard game [Friday night], we came out slow in energy but built it up throughout the game,” Highland Park senior Tina Berardi said. “We ended up getting the win when we needed to.”

Junior Lizzy LoGrande was the Giants second-leading scorer with nine. Green led the Scouts with 14 points. Junior Annie Keller added nine for Lake Forest.
