When Victor Law wasn’t grabbing rebounds and hitting midrange jumpers, St. Rita teammate Myles Carter was on the glass and slipping inside for putbacks and slam dunks.
St. Rita’s two 6-7 standouts were too much for Providence to handle Friday night as they led theNo. 16 Mustangs to a 29-13 halftime lead en route to a 62-41 Catholic League South victory in New Lenox.
“When my shots were open, I took ’em,’’ Law said. “I made my shots and my teammates were finding me. It was easy for me to knock them down.’’
Law scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half and also was a force on the boards with 13 rebounds for the game.
“Coach tells us ‘What are we going to do when we don’t score?’ ’’ Law said of going to the glass. “We really try to emphasize that. There’s more things to basketball than just offense.’’
Guard Dominique Matthews provided the offense in the third quarter with seven points when Providence outscored St. Rita 14-13. Matthews finished with a team-high 15 points and Carter had 11 points and nine rebounds.
“We really did a good job rebounding tonight,’’ St. Rita coach Gary DeCesare said. “We didn’t give them second shots in the first half.’’
Back-to-back slam dunks by Carter in the second quarter gave St. Rita a 26-10 lead before a layup by Matthews made it 28-10 with less than two minutes left in the half.
“We all can score,’’ Law said. “We’re all threats on the court.’’
Scott Kingsley contributed nine points and Charles Matthews seven for St. Rita (10-4, 5-1).
Kevin Kozan scored a game-high 23 points for Providence while Miles Boykin had six points and 11 rebounds. Providence (10-8, 3-2) didn’t get closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter.
“We ran into a buzz saw in the first half,’’ Providence coach Tim Trendel said of Law and Carter. “Those are two really, really good players. We tried to do some things maybe as a team we weren’t ready for.’’
