Jon Zandstra scored 25 points to lead Illiana Christian to a 58-53 comeback win over rival Chicago Christian Friday night.

Illiana Christian’s Jon Zandstra doesn’t like to lose. Especially to one of the Vikings’ biggest rivals in the Chicago Christian Knights.

Well, Zandstra and his teammates found themselves down 12 points at halftime on the road in a hostile environment at Chicago Christian and he refused to let his team go down.

The senior guard came out of the locker room and caught fire knocking down four three-pointers in the first four minutes of the third quarter giving the Vikings a 38-37 lead on their way to a 58-53 victory.

“I needed to do whatever I could,” he said. “I just felt I had it going.”

Zandstra finished the night with 25 points and 7 rebounds.

But it wasn’t just the execution on the offensive end that led to the comeback victory, according to Illiana Christian coach Tom Roozeboom.

“They were killing us while we were in man so we went to a 1-2-2 zone,” he said. “We had to shut down (Kaleb DeJager). He was killing us in the middle.”

The Vikings certainly listened to their coach and held DeJager scoreless in the second half after scoring eight points in the first. And it wasn’t just DeJager who struggled in the second half. Illiana Christian (12-7) limited the Knights to just four baskets in the second half, three of them coming in the final minutes of the game.

Knights coach Kevin Pittman summed up the second half quite easily.

“They hit shots and we didn’t.”

Pittman also went on to remind his team that this isn’t the end of the season.

“My end of the year speech isn’t ready. It’s just one game. “

And Chicago Christian (6-8) will need to forget about Friday night’s game quickly as they have an opportunity to erase the painful loss on Saturday.
