Lockport's Derrick Lockhart dribbles through the Lincoln-Way Central defenders. | Allen Cunningham~For Sun-Times Media

At one point during Lockport’s 53-32 SouthWest Suburban Blue victory over visiting Lincoln-Way Central, Porters coach Lawrence Thompson turned to his bench and expressed his frustration with all the three-pointers that were flying around the Lockport gym in the first quarter — six in all from both teams combined.

The treys weren’t just coming from the Porters, who ended up with eight in all, but some were from Lincoln-Way Central which had five.

Three-pointers are all well and good, but Thompson just didn’t want Lockport to live and die by the three.

“In the first half, that’s the most points we’ve scored (29) in a half in a long time,” Thompson said. “And that’s fool’s gold, that three-point shot. My discussion at halftime was, ‘Which team is going to realize that you can’t win the game from out there?’ So we stuck to the defense and made a couple of adjustments.”

So Lockport (5-9, 3-1) went from having a modest six-point advantage at the half to a whopping 12-point lead just four minutes into the third quarter. The lead was sparked by an 8-2 run, where David Robinson scored four points.

Robinson finished with 17 points.

“We just knew we didn’t want to live by the three and die by the three, because if we started missing them and they started making them then they would come back,” Robinson said. “We just ran out fast and tried to get the best shot we could get. We didn’t want them to score and we wanted to make sure they didn’t have a chance to come back (in the third quarter).”

Also scoring in double figures for Lockport was John Campbell with 11 points. Andrew Gosney added nine points.

Brad Bass led Lincoln-Way Central (7-8, 0-4) with 10 points and Joe Newtoff added nine points.
