Montini went on a 21-2 spurt in the second half en route to a 52-43 win over Rolling Meadows in the title game of the Montini Christmas Tournament Saturday.

Montini went from very so-so to very good in less than 10 minutes.

The Broncos used a 21-2 run over an 8:56 span of the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit and race past previously unbeaten Rolling Meadows 52-43 to win the Montini Christmas Tournament Saturday.

“We showed a lot of guts, coming back after getting down by 10 points twice,” Montini coach Jason Nichols said. “How about us holding them to 43 points (29 points under their average)? And we still can get better defensively. Not trying to be negative about that, but we can be even better.”

Junior forward Kelly Karlis led No. 4 Montini (18-1) with 16 points.

“We were getting beat on the boards in the first half and the coach told us we had to do a better job boxing out,” Karlis said. “Our girls did a better job rebounding in the second half and that helped during that comeback.”

Karlis said Montini is a different team that even just a few days ago.

“The Richwoods’ loss definitely woke us up,” Karlis said. “This is a big win for us. It shows we can win against the bigger teams.”

Alexis Glasgow led No. 7 Rolling Meadows (16-1) with 16 points, 14 before halftime. Tournament MVP Jackie Kemph finished with nine points after scoring 88 her previous three games.
