St. Edward was in control from the opening tip as it rolled over Morgan Park Academy 65-38 on Thursday night in pool play at the Immaculate Conception/Westmont Tournament.

The Green Wave (11-2) came out firing on all cylinders at Westmont, as it shot 11-of-16 from the floor in the first quarter, thanks in part to nine turnovers by the Warriors (2-7). That helped St. Edward build a 26-13 lead through one, and it didn’t let up from there.

The Warriors managed to cut down their turnovers in the second quarter to just four, but the Green Wave still cashed in on a number of easy buckets and shot 9-of-13 for the quarter to build a 44-19 halftime lead.

The Green Wave starters came on for the first two minutes or so of the third quarter before giving way to the bench for the remainder of the game.

As a result, 11 players got into the scoring column and the Green Wave tallied an impressive 24 bench points.

“It’s always nice when everybody gets a chance to play, and you get a chance to work on different things during a game like this,” said St. Edward coach P.J. White.

For the game, the Green Wave shot a blistering 29-of-51 (56.8 percent) from the field. Defensively, it held the Warriors to just 15-of-50 (30 percent) shooting and forced 21 turnovers.

“The bottom line is we’re learning, and we’re continuing to improve,” said White. “Overall it was a good, fun game for us tonight.”

Nick Duffy led the balanced Green Wave attack with 12 points and he was joined in double figures by reserve Logan Danner, who had 10. Antonio Domel and Davontae Elam added nine points each and Adrian Ponce had seven points and five rebounds.

The Warriors got a solid game from Nick Boarden, who had a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while Julian Northcross added six points and six rebounds.

St. Edward wraps up pool play against Elmwood Park at 6 p.m Friday.
