Darius Wells made a triumphant return to the South Elgin lineup on Wednesday. After missing the past six games with a foot injury, Wells scored a team-high 16 points as the Storm snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 58-41 win over Tilden in second-round action at the Jacobs Holiday Classic.

Wells missed his first four shots from the field, but eventually found his rhythm, knocking down three three-pointers.

“It felt great to be back,” Wells said. “I was a little rusty at the start, but after I realized the foot wasn’t going to be a problem the adrenaline took over. Once I made a couple shots I started getting my confidence back.”

Matt McClure, who had 31 points in an opening-round loss on Saturday, sparked the Storm early on with eight points in the first quarter, including a pair of threes, to help put South Elgin ahead 15-10 after the first quarter.

The Storm (3-11) was holding on to just a 24-22 lead at the break, but began to pull away with an 11-4 run to open the third quarter. Matt Padron started the run with a basket. Ryne Lundy followed with a couple free throws. Wells added a three-pointer while Lundy and Robert Grant finished it off with a couple buckets in the post.

The Storm then exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter to blow the game open. Jacob Hicks delivered the big blows with a pair of three-pointers.

“We are just trying to do what we can to get better every game,” South Elgin coach Chaz Taft said. “I liked the way we were able to handle their trapping today. We kept good floor spacing and kept attacking.”

McClure finished with 13 points for the Storm. Lundy added 11.

Alan Potts had 21 for Tilden.
