New Trier Green gets revenge against Fenwick

No.1 New Trier Green still had an earlier loss to Fenwick fresh on its collective mind when it defeated the No.6 Friars 6-1 on Wednesday at The Edge in Bensenville during round-robin play of the 19th Annual Holiday Hockey Classic.

It happened back in October, but New Trier Green doesn’t forget losses easily.

The No.1 Trevians had an earlier loss to Fenwick on their minds when they defeated the No.6 Friars 6-1 on Wednesday at The Edge in Bensenville during round-robin play of the 19th Annual Holiday Hockey Classic.

“We gave them three or four breakaways [in October] and they capitalized,” Trevians coach Bob Melton said. “I wouldn’t call it a revenge game, but we wanted to make sure we didn’t let that happen again.”

The format for games in the tournament is two 22-minute halves instead of three periods, and the Trevians came out hot.

New Trier senior forward Jesse Arnold scored two goals, both in the second half, and Drew Koch scored a goal and assisted on a tally by Barrett Stephan late in the first for a 4-0 cushion at the break. Alex Pegler and Brian Enriquez also scored for the Trevians (30-6-1), with their goals starting the scoring and coming just 50 seconds apart.

“This was a big game and a statement game in this tournament,” Arnold said. “We came out in the first half, put a few goals in and kind of got rolling from there.”

The Trevians limited Fenwick to 10 shots on goal. The Friars (20-8-4) didn’t get on the board until Michael Cimino scored with 3:26 to play.

“I think we kind of shocked them a little bit [in October],” Fenwick coach Kurt Kubat said. “So, at the end of the day there was no way they were going to let that happen again.”

Also motivating the Trevians was this tournament’s weight in state rankings for the postseason.

“This is a very big tournament,” said Koch, who scored on a rebound to make it 3-0 with 13:35 left in the first. “We always want to win this one to get that No.1 seed (in the playoffs) and this was exactly the kind of start we wanted.”
