Defending state champion Sandburg collected seven pins against host Glenbard North Thursday, including five in a row early, to claim a 49-26 victory.

Wrestling teams are always looking to maximize bonus points whenever they compete in a dual meet.

But when perennial powers like Sandburg and Glenbard North get together, you don't expect to see a lot of bonus points.

It was a different story, however, during Thursday's nonconference dual meet between the last two Class 3A champions.

The Eagles and Panthers combined for 10 falls and had just one decision in their 14 matches in Carol Stream.

And defending state champion Sandburg collected seven of those pins, including five in a row early, to claim a 49-26 victory.

The Panthers (7-4) won the opener but the Eagles (11-0) used five falls to win the next six matches as they grabbed a 33-4 lead.

"Glenbard North is always one of the top-of-the-line programs in Illinois," Sandburg coach Eric Siebert said. "So any time that you have an opportunity to win in their gym is a feat in itself.

"I thought that our upperweights did a really nice job and kind of set the tone for the dual. We stressed bonus points and scoring 49 points is a lot of points but giving up 26 is a lot, too."

After Brian Murphy won a major decision for Glenbard North to kick things off at 152, C.J. Brucki answered with a 9-7 win for the visitors.

Sandburg then received falls from Colin Holler (170), Chris Pajak (182), Ricky Robertson (195), Bill Gore (220) and Nate Sonneveld (285).

"We really worked hard in practice and all of the coaches told us that we had to get after it and that's what we did by getting all of the pins," Sonneveld said. "All of us wrestled extremely well.

"It's still December so we still have a way to go but we're going to peak at the right time. We have a lot of team chemistry and we all get along really well. We know that we have a big target on our backs since we won it last year."

After the hosts got a major decision from Pat Augustyn (106), the Eagles answered with a pin from Jim Pellegrino and a major decision from Jake Vales.

Glenbard North received three straight falls from Jon Marmolejo (126), Jered Cortez (132) and Johnny Gosinski (138) before Eagle John Pellegrino got a pin in the finale.

The two squads met in last year's Class 3A semifinals and the Eagles rallied for a 29-25 win before going on to claim the state title.
