Hampshire grinded through three tough quarters before taking charge in the fourth, securing a 54-49 victory over Crystal Lake South on Tuesday night in Hampshire.

After shooting just 12-of-44 through the first three quarters, the Whips (8-1) still found themselves down just 34-31 heading into the fourth quarter, as the Gators (2-5) didn’t shoot much better at 14-of-41 to that point.

“It was one of those grind-it-out games is what it was,” said Hampshire coach Bob Barnett. “Both teams were playing good defense but neither team really shot that well.”

The Whips — who won their eighth straight — cut the lead down to 37-35 to open the fourth quarter before a three-pointer from Brendan Waterworth at the 6:25 mark gave them the lead for good. From there, they were able to close things out with good shot selection and stellar free-throw shooting, as they connected on 5-of-7 from the field and 12-of-14 from the line for the quarter. Waterworth converted all six of his free throw attempts in the fourth.

“We shoot well from the line as a team, and we were able to get a couple buckets and some big free throws when we needed them in the fourth quarter there,” said Barnett.

The Gators still made it interesting down the stretch as Alex Bartusch connected on a three-pointer to cut the Whips lead to 50-44, then was fouled shooting a three on the next possession and hit all three of his free throws to make it 52-47.

The Whips turned the ball over trying to inbound it against the press on their subsequent possession, but the Gators were unable to turn the extra possession into points and the Whips put things out of reach with a pair of Shane Hernandez free throws.

Hernandez led the Whips with 15 points, while Waterworth added 14 and Ryan Cork chipped in 11. Senior Tyler Crater struggled through a rough 3-of-19 shooting night and had just eight points, but he managed to contribute on the boards with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Bartusch led the way for the Gators with 13 points, with Austin Rogers and Nick Geske contributing nine and eight points, respectively.
