Zion-Benton used an 11-0 run wrapped around the halftime break to earn a 53-44 win over Warren on Saturday in a North Suburban Lake Division game.

Junior forward Milik Yarbrough hit 5-of-10 shots from three-point range and scored a game-high 25 points.

One of his threes came after Warren closed to within 23-20 with 1:38 left in the first half. Then, after a Warren turnover, Gabe Ramirez hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Z-B a 29-20 edge.

When the Bees (9-1, 5-0) scored the first five points of the third quarter, it was 34-20 and Warren didn’t get the lead under double digits until the final seconds of play.

“I thought our kids played very hard defensively. We hung in their rebounding and we scored in a variety of ways,” Zion coach Don Kloth said. “Gabe Ramirez (eight points) hit some big shots coming off the bench and Milik had another big game.”

Yarbrough has been on Zion’s varsity for three years, and this was his first win ever over Warren.

“We really wanted to beat Warren after they beat us four times the last two years,” he said. “They’re still a good team; they play hard. We knew we had to keep pushing. We moved the ball around and got stops when we needed them.”

Point guard Maurice Young had a nice floor game (7 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) and Dorsey Cadette had eight points and three dimes.

Aarias Austin and Adrian Deere each had 15 points for Warren (6-5, 2-3) .

“It just seemed like every time we got some good shots this weekend, the ball didn’t go in for us,” said Warren coach Ryan Webber, whose team scored just 28 points in a Friday loss to Lake Forest.

“We had some good looks tonight, but Milik just had it going for them. You hope going in that he has an ‘off’ night, but he was dialed in on the middle of the net.

“It seems like every time we made a little run, they hit some big shots.”
