Dundee-Crown’s defense forced 28 turnovers to sprint past DeKalb 66-51 in a nonconference matchup Saturday.

Dundee-Crown rebounded from a slow start to earn a 66-51 nonconference victory over DeKalb Saturday in Carpentersville.

The Chargers (6-1) had little answer for Barbs big man Andre Harris in the first half as Harris scored 19 of DeKalb’s 26 first half points.

Dundee-Crown needed to control Harris if it had any hopes for a victory, and Chargers coach Lance Huber addressed this at halftime.

“We needed help from a few different guys on defense if we wanted to stop Harris,” Huber said. “We made some adjustments at half and were able to slow him down in the second half,”

Whatever the adjustments were they seemed to work as Harris was held to just four points in the second half.  Dundee-Crown increased its lead to 20 points and was able to put the game out of reach.

Brandon Rodriguez led Dundee-Crown with 20 points, but spent most of the second quarter on the bench because of two quick fouls.

“I’m very happy the coaches decided to sit me in the second quarter,” Rodriguez said. “Getting two quick fouls like that was dumb on my part, and allowed me to rest up for the second half.”

The Chargers defense was disruptive on Saturday forcing 28 DeKalb turnovers.

“Our press is very tough to break, and we were able to force a lot of turnovers,” Rodriguez said. “Our defense is what won us the game tonight.”

With starters in foul trouble early, Dundee-Crown needed to rely on its bench.

“Our bench was huge for us tonight,” said Huber. “Guys like Cordero (Parsons) stepped up and provided a lot of energy and scoring off the bench. We have nice depth and games like this show how important our bench is.”

J.T. Beasley scored 16 points for the Chargers and Cordero Parsons added 12 points off the bench.

The start of the game was delayed 25 minutes because of a fire alarm.
