Simeon loses, title hopes dwindle

Jaylon Tate led Simeon with 12 points and Kendrick Nunn scored 11 as the Wolverines fell to DeSoto, Texas, 67-57 in Grand Prairie, Texas on Thursday.

Simeon senior Jabari Parker entered this season with the highest goal of all.

“We don’t want our legacy to just be winning another state championship, because we already have all those trophies,” Parker said in the preseason. “We want to be different. A national championship would really do that, put us in another category.”

That dream was shattered by DeSoto, Tex. on Thursday. The Eagles knocked off Simeon 67-57 in Grand Prairie, Tex. in a game televised on ESPN.

Parker, still trying to get in shape and get over a foot injury, struggled mightily in the game. He scored five points and shot 1-for-11 from the field. He was called for traveling six times and didn’t play in the fourth quarter.

Without their superstar, the Wolverines had major difficulty scoring baskets. Simeon didn’t manage a field goal for a nine minute stretch of the game, letting DeSoto jump out to a 43-29 lead after three quarters. The Wolverines managed just one field goal in the second quarter and one in the third.

Jaylon Tate led Simeon (1-1) with 12 points and senior Kendrick Nunn added 11. Simeon committed 23 turnovers. DeSoto’s Matt Jones, a Duke recruit, scored 26.
