Marian Catholic dominated from the opening tip and cruised to a 57-22 win over Carmel East Suburban Catholic conference contest Wednesday night.

At least Carmel kept them under 100.

Saturday, Marian Central Catholic scored 101 points in a victory over Kenosha (Wis.) Tremper. Wednesday, Carmel Catholic held them well below that number but never challenged the Spartans in losing 57-22 in an East Suburban Catholic conference game.

“We came out scared for some reason, weren’t ready to play,” Carmel coach Kelly Perz said. “Our conference is tough. They are a good team.”

From the opening tip, No. 3 Marian Central Catholic (10-0, 3-0) showed early why they are undefeated this season. The Spartans feature three college commits in their lineup--seniors Megan Walsh, Aliyah Isaac and Melanie Ransom. Using their superior quickness and aggressive full court man-to-man defense, the Spartans forced 18 first half turnovers.

Carmel (7-4, 1-2) trailed at one point 7-4 early in the game. But when senior guard Briana Narcissi stole a pass and took it the length of the floor to make it 24-4 with 6:00 left in the half, it capped a 17-0 run for Marian Central Catholic. The Corsairs never got closer than 20 points the rest of the game.

“In girls basketball, anything can happen on any night. We talked about coming out strong, with energy and enthusiasm,” Marian Central Catholic coach Annie Byrne said. “I thought we played really well in the first half.”

Marian Central Catholic was led by Isaac, who scored 11 points. Sophomore guard Teniya Page added 10 points. Senior Claire Ogrinc led the Corsairs with six points.

“We have to get back in the gym,” Perz said. “(Thankfully) we have six practices before our next game.”
