Marshall's Donovan Griffin lays in a shot past T.F. North's Nicholas Wood. | Patrick Gleason~For Sun-Times Media
Derrick Miles never flinched from the pressure.
“I went up there knowing I am a senior and the team needed me to make the shots,” the Marshall guard said.
He drilled two free throws with 27.9 seconds remaining that proved to be the difference as the Commandos withstood a huge T.F. North rally for a 59-57 victory in the Team Rose Shootout at the Kroc Center on Sunday.
T.F. North (3-1) stormed back from a 15-point deficit to tie the game with 1:07 remaining.
The officials then called a foul against the Meteors on the inbounds play after a Marshall timeout.
“They were pulling me and pushing me,” Miles said.
T.F. North coach Tim Bankston was livid and approached two officials after the game ended on a no-call when a Meteors player hit the floor and lost control of the ball.
Marshall (5-2) used a 13-2 run to lead 30-20 at halftime.
Cris Craig scored 19 points to lead the Commandos.
Nick Wood scored 17 points and Delano Deere added 15 for the Meteors.
