Loyola’s Pujals out for season

Loyola will be without the services of last year’s leading scorer, Peter Pujals, for the entirety of its season due to an injury he suffered playing football.

Loyola learned last week it will be without last season’s leading scorer for good.

Peter Pujals injured his right wrist while playing quarterback in the fall, but the senior hoped a couple of weeks of rest after the season would help it heal.

It did not.

Then, a recent visit to the doctor revealed a hairline fracture that forced Pujals, a guard, to shut it down for the basketball season.

“It stinks,” he said. “It kills me to sit out because I love basketball.”

Pujals said the injury occurred Sept. 29 in the team’s 30-27 overtime win against Mount Carmel, the eventual Class 8A champions. Although the wrist on his throwing arm was sore, he kept it quiet because he didn’t want to miss any time on the field.

“I never got it checked out,” he said. “I just got it taped every game. It was a little bit of an annoyance, and I thought it would go away once I was done playing.”

Pujals doesn’t need surgery, but he will get fitted for a cast in a couple of weeks. He will use the time to put on weight and work out his lower body to prepare himself for college football at Holy Cross, where he’s verbally committed to play.

Pujals said he expects to start throwing the football again in February or March.

“I had to make a decision now not to play basketball to make sure I’m 100 percent and totally fine for football,” he said. “Hopefully, this will turn out to be a positive.”
