Deerfield was dominant early and fought off a late Glenbrook North run to get a 36-29 win in Central Suburban North play Friday night.

It only took a few minutes for Deerfield to take the lead Friday night. Once it did, it never gave it up.

When freshman Margot Sylvan split a double team to make it 4-4 in the game’s opening minutes, the Warriors never trailed again, cruising to a 36-29 victory in a Central Suburban North girls basketball game Friday.

In winning its fourth straight game, Deerfield freshman guard tandem of Sylvan (eight points) and Hayley Greer (game-high 12 points) sparked the Warriors. Both splitting time at point guard, they pushed the ball in transition, blowing by Spartan defenders. This leading to easy Warriors baskets inside for senior Sarah Ginn and junior Emelia Karkazis.

“They’re basketball players. It took us a minute to gel and learn the offense,” Deerfield coach Mike Muldrow said. “That’s to be expected. Now we are all together on the same page.”

Deerfield (5-4, 3-0) led 22-12 at the half. A steal and layup by Sylvan (12 points) with three minutes left in the third quarter gave the Warriors a 30-16 lead. Their biggest lead was 32-16 at the end of the quarter.

Behind senior Anna Marovitz, who led Glenbrook North with 10 points, the Spartans went on a 11-2 run and got as close as 34-27 with 3:50 remaining.

But the Spartans were unable to finish on numerous opportunities around the basket and Deerfield held on for the victory.

“We knew about the freshman. We just didn’t play good defense and couldn’t make shots,” Glenbrook North coach Renee Brosnan said.
