Steven Cook scored a season-high 25 points Tuesday to help lift New Trier to a 62-45 victory over previously undefeated Niles West in the Central Suburban South opener for both clubs.

Steven Cook got blocked twice in the lane by David McCoy early in the third quarter.

The New Trier senior showed no signs of letting that bother him or any indication of backing down from the challenge.

Instead, Cook stayed aggressive and later scored a basket that started the Trevians on the road to a 62-45 win over previously undefeated Niles West in the Central Suburban South opener for both clubs.

“That’s what you need to do,” said Cook, who scored a season-best 25 points, including the final six points of the game.

Cook had help.

Senior Charlie Suse hit a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter to give the Trevians a 45-35 lead, and senior Stas Banas converted a four-point play early in the fourth to extend the advantage even more.

The Trevians (6-2) never let the Wolves (5-1) within 11 the rest of the way.

“Great team win,” Cook said. “I thought we finished well. I think that was the best we’ve finished all season.”

The two teams traded baskets during a 36-point second quarter before New Trier scored consecutive baskets, including one by Cook, to go into the half up 29-25. The Trevians never trailed in the final two quarters.

McCoy, a former AAU teammate of Cook’s, scored a team-high 14 in the loss. Senior Austin Angel added 10 points for the Trevians.

“We still are looking for some consistency,” New Trier coach Scott Fricke said. “We have the potential to be a pretty darn good team.”
