The Niles West girls basketball team followed up their first win of the season Friday with a 44-35 victory Saturday over rival Niles North.

On Friday night, the Niles West girls basketball team won its first game of the season.

One night later, the Wolves won what they considered to be their biggest game of the regular season with a 44-35 victory over Niles North.

“Personally, I think it means everything,” said Niles West senior Molly Kleppin, of beating Niles North. “It’s kind of like all my hard work has built up to this game because it’s our big rivalry and it’s the game we look forward to every year. It means a lot, but it also means a lot to our team. We’ve been struggling, and I think this is a good confidence booster for our team.”

Niles West (2-3) held the lead for the vast majority of Saturday night’s game at Niles North (0-7), yet both teams struggled to play with poise in a sloppy game that included 45 turnovers and 40 fouls between the two teams.

The Wolves were led to victory by sophomore point guard Katherine Delara, who spent much of the first half on the bench because of foul trouble. Delara led Niles West with a team-high 12 points, and the Wolves’ balanced attack saw five players score five points or more.

“We knew that the team with the most composure was going to come out with win,” Delara said.

Freshman forward Stephanie Donado led Niles North in scoring with 14 points.
