Niles West continued its dominance of the Skokie Showdown on Saturday night, beating host Niles North 67-63.
Niles West senior Alex Darville, who scored 12 points in the first half, helped the Wolves overcome an 8-0 deficit to start the game before senior forward David McCoy came through in the game’s decisive quarter. McCoy scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth, and found Darville for a layup that gave the Wolves a four-point lead with less than 30 seconds remaining.
“It’s great to end my high school career with a win here,” Darville said. “This is just an amazing, amazing atmosphere. I love our fans. I love my team. It’s great (to beat Niles North).”
Niles West (5-0) has defeated the Vikings in each of Niles North coach Glenn Olson’s four seasons at the helm. Yet, Olson said he’s OK with losing against the team’s primary rival because of the level of postseason success Niles North (3-2) has experienced in recent years.
“There’s a ton we can take from this game,” Olson said. “This is a non-conference game on a Saturday night in December. Win or lose, this isn’t going to make or break us. We lost this game two years ago, and Niles West is handing in gear (at the end of the season) and we were still playing. I’ll lose this game every year.”
Niles North senior Malachi Nix scored 19 points, tying senior teammate Billy Voitik for the most points scored in the game. Niles West point guard Ahmad Gibson was able to largely match Nix’s output, however, scoring 14 points on just six shots from the field.
