Despite a game-high 33 points from senior guard Luke Potnick — and a 9-point lead entering the fourth quarter — the Buffalo Grove boys basketball team fell victim to a dramatic comeback effort by host Elk Grove, losing 72-68 in overtime.
The Bison (2-3) held a 60-58 lead with 1:15 left in the fourth, but after the Grenadiers (3-2) tied it at 60-60 on a pair of free throws by senior guard Austin Amann (team-high 21 points), Buffalo Grove turned the ball over — and neither team scored again in regulation.
With the score tied at 62-62 early in OT, Amann drained a long three-pointer for a 65-62 advantage, and the Grens never looked back, increasing the margin to 72-66 with 35 ticks remaining. A three-pointer by Buffalo Grove senior guard Steve Soifer finished the scoring.
“We were making mistakes, but we settled down,” Amann said. “You’ve got to have a short memory with all the momentum swings. We stuck to our game plan that we’d finish strong.”
Meanwhile, Bison coach Ryan O’connor was left to ponder one that got away.
“We had that 9-point lead in the third, but we got lackadaisical on defense,” he said. “OT is a huge part of the game, too, and you have to shut ‘em down there. But again, the difference was we broke down defensively.”
