Zion-Benton turned a close game at halftime into a rout, blowing past the Stevenson girls basketball team 67-47 Thursday night.

The Zee-Bees (4-1) led the Patriots (0-4) by a mere point (25-24) at the break but exploded in the second half, increasing the margin to nine at 45-36 after three quarters. They upped the lead to 52-36 before Stevenson finally got on the board in the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws by senior guard Kari Moffatt (team-high 16 points).

Junior guard Samantha Rodriguez led the Zion-Benton charge, pouring in a game-high 27 points, with 18 coming on 3-pointers.

“I guess I was on,” Rodriguez said. “(At halftime), our coach (Tanya Johnson) told us we were kind of slow in the first half, and we picked up the defensive intensity in the second half, and that opened up the offense. After we picked it up, we definitely felt we were taking over.”

A plethora of missed shots and giveaways plagued the Pats after the break, and Stevenson coach Tom Dineen offered no excuses.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” he said. “We did not defend the three very well, and did not have an answer for them inside, either. The third thing, we didn’t handle the ball well. We missed some easy shots, too. We played hard, but we just didn’t have an answer for (Zion-Benton) tonight.”
