In the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division, Vernon Hills is a big elephant in the middle of the room.

But rather than pretend the Cougars — second in state last year and loaded again this winter — aren’t there, Antioch’s girls basketball team is being proactive, scheduling powerful opponents that will better prepare the Sequoits for meetings with Vernon Hills down the road.

One such was Cary-Grove, which overwhelmed the Sequoits 52-28 on Wednesday night in a nonconference game.

Still, Antioch coach Tim Borries was upbeat about the contest.

“We’ve started out 4-3 against five or six 4A schools,” said Borries. “We’ve been playing some quality competition. We had a nice win against Wheeling.

“We haven’t started off 4-3 in a long time. It’s a lot better than starting 1-6, which we have been the last couple of years.”

In Wednesday’s loss, Megan Borries had 10 points.

Cary-Grove (4-2) was led by Olivia Jakubicek with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

“We played Cary-Grove tough to start the game. Then, all of a sudden, the turnovers came,” said Borries. “Looking at the games we’ve played, when we take care of the ball, we do fine.

“When we start making bad decisions and turning the ball over, we lose our offensive rhythm. Perimeter play on the offensive end and our interior defensive play are two key spots we have to be our best at.”

Antioch actually led 10-9 early, but wound up committing 22 turnovers in the contest.

Besides Borries, also starting were Paige Gallimore, Abby Augustin, Abbi McIlhany and Alex Fracek.
